The Landscape Project – More Than Just Old Stones

Beyond the Buildings

The foundation’s leaders recognised early on that saving the buildings alone would not suffice. A historic alpine village is inseparably linked to its cultural landscape. Therefore, the «Progetto Paesaggio» (Landscape Project) was launched in parallel with the hotel, with a budget of approximately 710,000 Swiss francs.

Restoring the Cultural Landscape

This ambitious undertaking aims at the physical reactivation of the agricultural and artisanal infrastructure. Through painstaking work, the overgrown dry-stone walls (muri a secco) of the agricultural terraces were cleared and repaired. Old chestnut groves, fruit trees, and grapevines were professionally tended and revived.

The project also encompasses the faithful restoration of the old village infrastructure that was indispensable for historic self-sufficiency: the grain mill (mulino) by the stream, the communal village bread oven (forno), and the important chestnut-drying facility (the graa) were rescued from decay and restored for educational purposes. Visitors can now explore these complex interconnections along meticulously signposted, ethnographic educational trails.
